This lovely and emotionally resonant film about a family shattered by grief deserves better than a forgettably glib title that conjures up images of beer brawls or gangster affiliations.
But don't let that put you off. The Boys Are Back is a film for adults that poignantly addresses the emotional fallout from two staggering familial disasters: divorce and early death. The effects of these tragedies on its innocent victims - children - is explored believably, avoiding contrivance or sentimentality.
Director Scott Hicks has explored familial ties before in 1996's terrific Shine. Here, Hicks adapts the 2001 memoir by Simon Carr.
