Samuel L. Jackson Pulp Fiction

Cat and mouse

September 27, 2011 @ 11:00 am in Subscript, Tarantino
Quentin Tarantino introduces us to Jules Winnfield’s dark side early in Pulp Fiction in a riveting, stomach-tightening scene of cat and mouse. Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) and Vince Vega (John Travolta) are let into a dingy apartment by an informant so that they can confront Brett (Frank Whaley), who has ripped off their boss, Marsellus.

The savory world of Tarantino

September 25, 2011 @ 8:00 am in Subscript, Tarantino
Some of the most delicious pieces of fiction found in Pulp are the consumable and edible creations born from the mind of Tarantino and brought into full bloom on the big screen for all of us in the audience to drool over. Everything sipped, smoked, or served up to eat in the film - whether a Durward Kirby burger or a glass of McCleary Scotch - is made to seem like the very best and most mouth-watering in existence.

Shot to the heart

September 24, 2011 @ 8:00 am in Subscript, Tarantino
When I first viewed Pulp Fiction I was slightly traumatized by the scene where Vince (John Travolta) stabs Mia (Uma Thurman) in the heart with adrenaline to bring her back to life. It was probably the most intense thing I had ever watched. Mia accidentally overdoses on Vince’s stash of heroine, so Vince decides to drive Mia to his dealer’s house.

Marvin and the miracle

September 23, 2011 @ 8:00 am in Subscript, Tarantino
In the second half of Pulp Fiction we find out why Vincent and Jules are dressed in shorts and t-shirts looking like “dorks.” In the start of the movie we witness Jules and Vincent kill Brett and his friend “Flock of Seagulls” for withholding Marsellus Wallace’s briefcase. We never really learn what is in the magical briefcase or what deal Brett and Marsellus had, but we do know that Vincent and Jules were ordered to kill Brett and retrieve the briefcase.

Lancet

September 21, 2011 @ 9:00 am in Subscript, Tarantino
In the seminal work of Quentin Tarantino that featured explosive violence, magnificent characters, and unforgettable dialogue amid three different yet interconnected stories told brilliantly out of sequence, one scene stood out above all others. Pulp Fiction’s ultimate non sequitur: the story of the watch

Fruit brute: what year is it?

September 20, 2011 @ 10:01 am in Subscript, Tarantino
In 1994 Americans were focused on the passing of Kurt Cobain, Jackie Onassis, Richard Nixon, Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman and those lost in the Northridge earthquake. Fortunately, later that year Quentin Tarantino served up a delicious distraction from these events…the watershed film Pulp Fiction. Pulp Fiction is one of the finest examples of postmodernist film. According to Quentin his inspiration for this masterpiece was to draw upon a mix of French new wave, spaghetti westerns and blaxploitation movies from the '70s all mixed up together.

The Tarantino case studies in negotiation

September 19, 2011 @ 8:00 am in Subscript, Tarantino
To look for lessons on how to relate with others in a film so well-punctuated by gunfire of all gauges may seem futile. But Pulp Fiction, for all of its violence and darkness, seems to—amidst the carnage—offer viewers something quite unexpected: a crash course in negotiation.

Making spoons

September 18, 2011 @ 8:00 am in Subscript, Tarantino
When I think of a favorite scene from Pulp Fiction, about a dozen images come to mind: the red spot on Mia’s chest, Vincent’s Santa Cruz t-shirt, the glowing briefcase, the list goes on. But the scene I think perfectly encapsulates the movie is what I believe to be the most intimate scene of the movie, when Butch (Bruce Willis) returns from his boxing match to the motel where his girlfriend Fabienne (Maria de Medeiros) awaits him.

Royale with cheese

September 17, 2011 @ 8:00 am in Subscript, Tarantino
One of the most iconic and memorable scenes Quentin Tarantino draws for us in Pulp Fiction is the “Royale with Cheese” scene. Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) are two lovable hitmen who work for a crime boss named Marsellus. As they go about their hitmen duties, they chat nonchalantly about inconsequential topics, much as two office workers would around the water cooler, and that’s how Vince comes to explain a few key differences between Europe and America to Jules.

Goes to show you never can tell

September 16, 2011 @ 8:13 am in Subscript, Tarantino
My favorite moment from Pulp Fiction is the confrontation between Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis) and Vincent Vega (John Travolta). Director Quentin Tarantino creates for us a scene that thrills while incorporating classic elements: the departing hero on the cusp of his exit from danger, dragged back to perform one last task that may lead to his demise as safety waits around the corner.
