In 1671, the Prince du Conde–deep in debt and suffering from gout–hopes to win command of the French Army. He receives word that King Louis XIV wishes to visit his estate. Du Conde asks Francois Vatel, a master chef and entertainer, to make the arrangements. However, trouble ensues when Vatel meets Anne de Montausier, a lovely courtesan and the king’s new mistress, with whom Vatel falls treacherously in love.
