In the Dutch port of Surabaya in 1913, an all-female orchestra led by conductor Sam Giancomo plays each night at a hotel owned by a bigoted German Schomberg. Schomberg pesters Sam to sell him Alma, the prettiest girl in the band. When Sam relents, Alma asks Axel Heyst to save her. As they escape to Heyst’s island and become lovers, Schomberg points sinister Mr. Jones and his two fellow bandits to the island, saying that there is an untapped fortune lying in an abandoned mine.
