Danny Boyle’s latest film Trance will be in theaters April 5. The film is receiving good buzz and looks to show off the director’s frenetic style.

Boyle is at the SXSW Film Festival this week to promote his new film. During the panel, he talked about the current state of filmmaking and the capability of shooting films on our cell phones.

It’s a bit sad to see the death of celluloid, but at the same time the whole industry has moved to digital and it’s a whole new world. The power of the computers inside your smartphone is incredible and can do tremendous things. It really just depends on what you’re shooting.

I’ve been a bit surprised that we haven’t seen more comedies get shot on [more consumer oriented cameras and DSLRs] because they don’t really need the high production values that an action film might entail. Yet we’re seeing action films and thrillers already shoot on these types of cameras.

During the panel, the audience asked Boyle some great questions including what he wants his films to do.

I want them to mesmerize people. I want it to pin you in your seat. Because that word “mesmerism” comes from the godfather from hypnotism. And I do want that rabbit in the headlights. We don’t go to a dark room to discuss a film, we go to a dark room to experience it. You take it away with you, after that. But in that moment, when you’ve paid your $12, I want you to be assaulted by the film. There can be silence and reflective moments but I want the film to assault you.

In other news, Boyle shed more light on his Trainspotting sequel news which could bring the film to screen around the 20th anniversary of Trainspotting in 2016. The film will be loosely based on Irvine Welsh’s follow-up book to ‘Trainspotting’ called ‘Porno’.

This has been a long time coming. There’s always been this long-term plan for Trainspotting 2. If John [Hodge] can produce a decent enough script, I don’t think there will be any barriers to Ewan [McGregor] or any of the cast coming back. I think they’ll wanna know that the parts are good so they don’t feel like they are letting anyone down. The reason for doing it again is that people cherish the original, people remember it or have caught up with it if they never saw because they were younger. So you want to make sure you don’t disappoint people. That will be the only criteria I think.

Trainspotting is available on DVD, Blu-ray and Digital Download.
