Did you know that the casting director is the only opening single card film credit that does not receive its own Oscar nomination? A new documentary premiered on HBO called 'Casting By', about the late, great casting director, Marion Dougherty and she talks about this subject and her life in Hollywood. Dougherty cast over 70 feature films and many filmmakers and producers mention how she brought attention to actors they would never have considered, or fought for a particular person they had earlier dismissed. Watch the trailer.

While some believe the director and producers ultimately make the final casting call, it's the casting directors that find new faces and carefully vet all talent. As Scorsese states in the doc, "More than 90 percent of directing a picture is the right casting."
