Every Friday throughout the summer, we’re posting a movie that someone on our staff has picked as one of their favorite Miramax films. While the summer blockbusters invade the theaters, consider watching one of the staff picks over the weekend instead. Today’s pick is The Wayans Brothers’ Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood from our Digital Content Specialist, Keenan Smith.
I’ve heard the saying many times in my life, “A day without laughter is a day wasted.” I can attest that everyone at Miramax knows, not a day goes by that I’m not laughing, whether it’s a joke between co-workers or just laughing at myself. My enjoyment of laughter is why I have chosen Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood as my Summer Movie Staff Pick. Not only do I provide the laugh track for the entire film, but it also takes me back to what I consider some of the best years of my life. And honestly, who wouldn’t want that feeling of nostalgia again… especially during the summer?
There is no denying that some out there may not fully appreciate the humor this movie has to offer or the stereotypical nature of the characters and their surroundings. But what I love is this movie’s lighthearted parody of the events and films that were predominate in black culture during the mid-to-late nineties. At the time, the majority of films featuring an all-black cast were serious dramas touching on subjects of drug dealing and addiction, interracial dating, gun violence, racial injustice, and the struggle to be somebody in a world that labels you a failure at birth. What Don’t Be a Menace provided the viewer at this time in history was a chance to take a step back and add a little lighthearted humor to the everyday drama.
So if you’re in the mood for an edgy comedy that will give you that warm & fuzzy home sweet hood feeling, check out Don’t Be A Menace this weekend. #AllBlackEverything
