Every Friday we’re featuring a movie someone on our staff has chosen as their favorite Miramax film. While the summer blockbusters invade the theaters, consider watching one of the staff picks over the weekend instead. Today’s pick is Sin City from our HR Intern, Patrick Allen. Watch it to get ready for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For in theaters August 22!
Epic, classic, and dark; Sin City does a perfect job of connecting eerie and creepy with sexy and sultry. The movie is in black and white, which I absolutely loved with the exceptions of red, green, and yellow. Bringing those intense colors out on the screen gives the movie a cartoon, yet real-life feel. Everything about the movie captures your attention from beginning to end. The short, comic book style script and the mild coloration makes you feel like a comic book is being acted out right in front of you.
One of my favorite scenes is the massacre by the prostitutes in Old Town on the police. Miho, [Devon Aoki] is epic in this fight scene with her killing skills. With her personality and demeanor, Rosario Dawson as Gail, the head person of the girls in Old Town, is a perfect casting choice.
Another fantastic scene is with Hartigan [Bruce Willis] killing Yellow Bastard before killing himself to save Nancy [Jessica Alba] from torture, rape, and eventual death.
Not only is the movie just acted out and scripted well, but the political and religious undertones scream throughout the movie. The seemingly disconnected stories intertwine so delicately. Sin City is easily one of my favorite movies that I could watch over and over again.
