Synopsis

In the early days of America's involvement in World War II, reporter Ruth Gruber gave particular attention to President Franklin D. Roosevelt's announcement that the US would grant asylum to 982 European refugees from Nazi labor camps. Despite the objections of her parents, Gruber volunteers to escort the refugees to the US, bravely battling against bureaucracy and prejudice to win both dignity and fair treatment for the new settlers.
